Central Ohio Trauma System

Across the nation trauma care is a growing concern.

The Central Ohio Trauma System (COTS) is a network of hospitals, city and county officials and health care professionals whose focus is to promote trauma education and prevention, collect trauma data, coordinate trauma services and ensure that victims of serious injury receive appropriate care.

Established in 1998, the Central Ohio Trauma System operates as an inclusive system where community partners:
Work together to resolve issues associated with trauma and emergency care
Offer expanded trauma education and training opportunities
Coordinate preparedness for large-scale disasters
Enhance collaboration and avoid duplication of effort


Programs and initiatives of the Central Ohio Trauma System include:
Develop and maintain a Trauma Registry to collect and maintain demographic and clinical data on trauma victims to guide community-wide decision making
Coordinate trauma education programs to promote trauma health care in central Ohio
Coordinate regional health care disaster planning
Establish uniform family violence screening protocols
Establish a regional plan to address hospital diversion of EMS patients


Across the nation trauma care is a growing concern. In central Ohio the Central Ohio Trauma System, a 501(c)(3) organization, is the established group and forum focused exclusively on this concern. As a tax-exempt entity, contributions in support of its mission and program of activities are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law. An operating fund for the Central Ohio Trauma System is maintained by the Columbus Medical Association Foundation.
